FAQs about psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES)

Will I get better?

You can recover fully and lead a normal life. Recognizing that the episodes are nonepileptic is the first step of recovery. It may also mean that unnecessary treatments could be stopped (always under your doctor's supervision).

Sometimes just being diagnosed with PNES is enough for people to get better. For many other patients with PNES, specific treatments (such as psychotherapy) are necessary for the episodes to improve. For a number of patients, the episodes can become a long-term problem. However, even if the episodes continue, many people can learn to live a full and active life.
